New research shows that sea levels along many coastlines are significantly higher than assumed in most risk assessments. A U.S. federal appeals court has upheld the conviction of Jerry Boylan, captain of the dive boat Conception. The 71-year-old former ship's officer had already been found guilty in November 2023 of committing “misconduct, negligence, or carelessness by a ship's officer” – a legal basis known as “manslaughter by a seaman.” In May 2024, Boylan was sentenced to four years in federal prison. With the appeals court's decision, his sentence is now final and he must begin serving his time.
