The disastrous cyclone Rai (Odette) has devastated large areas of the Philippines. One terrible news followed the other; so it is good to be able to report something positive from the Philippines. The Sea Explorers - Chris Heim, Rolf Mühlemann and Hervé Jain - report from the destinations Dauin and Malapascua, which were unaffected by the typhoon.

Dauin and Malapascua untouched by typhoon

After the Corona pandemic has already kept the whole world on tenterhooks for two years now, the super typhoon "Odette" brought an additional immense burden and huge challenge to the Central Philippines (Visayas) and its population.

The hurricane, which swept across several islands on December 16-17, 2021, with unearthly force and heavy rain, left behind partly massive destruction on land and correspondingly much suffering: Thousands of inhabitants lost their roofs over their heads and also their sources of income, power lines were knocked down and communication was or still is cut off. Great damage has also been done to agriculture and fishing boats, which has inevitably led and will continue to lead to an explosion in the cost of basic foodstuffs.

These events have not left us unscathed, especially Sea Explorers Cabilao was affected. Fortunately, our resorts and centers in Dauin/Island Negros and Malapascua were almost untouched. After careful consideration and damage analysis of everything - sadly including some of the world's best dive sites to date - we have decided with a heavy heart to temporarily close our resort and dive center in Cabilao for the time being and possibly even sell it later. Because in 2023 with the new and comfortable Liveaboard "M/Y Gypsy" a new chapter will be opened and Sea Explorers Highlight will be offered. In addition, with Sipalay in Negros Occidental, a diving top-class will be available to the Aquanauts. Due to the current omission of Cabilao, unfortunately, the well-known and from us "invented" island hopping by dive boat will be put on ice for the time being.

Additional downer: the clientele at Alona Beach on the island of Panglao off Bohol has changed a lot in the last few years and the demand for this destination has become weaker and weaker, at least among our guests. As already announced, we had closed our dive center there long before the typhoon and will soon add the much less touristy Sipalay to our program.

The three makers of Sea Explorers, Chris Heim, Rolf Mühlemann and Hervé Jain, commented: "Now it is time for us to join forces and continue to look forward, we are known for positive changes. With the new liveaboard, which will be used for destinations such as Tubbataha or the Coron Wrecks, as well as the dive center in Sipalay, something completely new is on the move. By the way, we used the time of the pandemic for reconstructions, renewals and extensions in Dauin. And let's hope that the situation will soon allow us to visit our beautiful Philippines again. One thing is still for sure - our important motto will always be "Dive with a smile"'. Promised!
