Sea turtle Caretta caretta is spreading again

According to the Guardian, the sea turtle Caretta caretta (loggerhead turtle) seems to be spreading again in Greece, as it has in Italy.

On Sekania beach on the island of Zakynthos, also known as the largest “maternity ward” in the Mediterranean for this species of turtle, there are not only a record number of nests this year, at 1,200, but also a particularly high number of hatchlings that have survived, the newspaper quoted a representative of the WWF as saying.

60 percent of the nests of this turtle species can be found in Greece. While the number of nests was still declining at the beginning of the 2000s, it rose significantly last year and this year – and according to the “Guardian”, the same applies to other turtles that reproduce in the Mediterranean region. As in Calabria, the Caretta caretta on Zakynthos benefits particularly from the local national park.

Diving on Zakynthos

Nero-Sport, the only German diving center on the island, has been in existence for over 35 years in the small, tranquil village of Limni Keriou in the southeast of Zakynthos. Located in the eastern Mediterranean, it is the southernmost island of the Ionian Sea and was called “Fiore di Levante” or the Flower of the East by the Venetians.

Direct flights from Germany, Austria, Switzerland and many other countries make it easy to get there, and the option of booking accommodation close to the dive center (please contact Nero Sport) guarantees a stress-free stay. The center's own restaurant in the same building is another plus.

Nero-Sport offers you a choice of more than 70 beautiful and varied dive sites every day. The southwest and west coasts of Zakynthos offer caves, grottos, crevices and steep slopes, as well as some reefs. Connoisseurs and experts confirm time and again: “Some of the most beautiful dive sites that the Mediterranean and Greece have to offer.”

Fantastic visibility and, above all, short journeys guarantee 2-4 trips a day. Night dives are offered several times a week, depending on demand. Zakynthos' dive sites are ideal for underwater photographers and videographers. Groupers and amberjacks, moray eels and octopuses, lobsters, slipper lobsters and shrimps, rays and colorful growth offer unique opportunities for pictures. Encounters with the turtles that regularly come to the bay to lay their eggs are also particularly impressive.
