Indonesia is considering lifting all quarantine requirements for inbound travelers starting in April as Covid 19 hospitalizations and deaths remain under control despite a resurgence in overall cases.

Meanwhile, the required quarantine period for inbound travelers who have received a third dose of vaccine will be shortened from five to three days starting next week, Luhut Panjaitan, cabinet minister in charge of pandemic response in Java and Bali, said at his weekly press briefing Monday. PCR testing will still be mandatory for incoming travelers.

"We need to balance the need to maintain health with the need to maintain the economy," Panjaitan said. "We need to keep the economy healthy." He added that the Omicron variant of the coronavirus is far less deadly than the previous ones that overwhelmed the medical system in the two recent years.

The number of daily infections fell to 36,501 on Monday, while the number of deaths rose to 145, the highest level since Sept. 23, according to the Health Ministry on Monday. This is still significantly lower compared to the more than 2,000 deaths recorded in July last year. The nationwide covid hospitalization rate is about 30%, Panjaitan said.

National carrier PT Garuda Indonesia is discussing a plan to resume direct flights to and from Australia, Tourism Minister Sandiaga Uno said at a separate briefing Monday.
