The Wreck of MS Zenobia and Sports Activities on Land
Cyprus has developed into an important diving destination – not least because of the spectacular Zenobia wreck. This truly impressive site is ranked among the top 10 diveable wrecks worldwide. The ferry sank in June 1980 on her maiden voyage and lies only a few minutes by boat from the coast in Larnaca Bay.
The Wreck in Detail
• The Zenobia is 172 meters long, was sent on its first voyage carrying around 100 trucks, and sank off Larnaca due to a technical failure.
• It rests at depths between 17 and 42 meters – suitable for well-trained recreational divers as well as for technically oriented wreck dives.
• A fascinating underwater world has developed around the wreck: large groupers, barracudas, moray eels, sea turtles and many other species now call it home.
• Access is easy: from the harbor area in Larnaca, the Zenobia can be reached quickly by boat.
Why Cyprus?
In addition to diving experiences, Cyprus offers a wide range of activities on land, including:
Watersports Along the Coast
Surfing, kitesurfing, sailing and stand-up paddling are standard activities on Cyprus’ coasts – ideal for sporty travelers who love the sea.
Cycling & Mountain Biking
Thanks to the topography of the coastal landscape and the Troodos Mountains, a variety of scenic routes are available: paved roads for road cyclists, gravel tracks and single trails for mountain bikers – all in excellent weather conditions. One popular route leads from Troodos to Pafos, covering around 65 kilometres through picturesque villages and the Diarizos Valley. Bike stations, rental services and bike-friendly hotels complement the offering.
Hiking & Running
For hiking enthusiasts, the forested heights of the Troodos Mountains and the wild, romantic Akamas peninsula with nature trails such as the Aphrodite and Adonis routes are ideal. Runners also benefit from great conditions: mild weather almost year-round, long seaside promenades and various running events – especially in spring.
Best Times to Visit
For cycling, hiking and running, the periods from February to June and September to December are particularly suitable, as the weather remains mild and pleasant. For divers, the season is long – the Zenobia can be explored in good conditions from spring to autumn.
