Scuba diving and sports activities on land – a perfect combination in Cyprus
When divers think of Cyprus, the first thing that springs to mind is the sunken wreck of the Zenobia, which not only constitutes one of the three largest wrecks in the Mediterranean, but also ranks amongst the top 10 diveable wrecks worldwide. The huge hull of the Zenobia lies at a depth of between 16 and 42 metres and can be reached in a couple of minutes by boat from Larnaka harbour.
With a length of some 172 metres, a width of 23 metres and its erstwhile cargo of 104 trucks, it makes the heart of any diving enthusiast miss a beat in anticipation. In June 1980, the Swedisch RoRo-ferry began her maiden voyage, with cargo bays full, in Greece enroute to Syria and sank due to a computer error less than 2 km from the saving harbour. Over 100 trucks float in eerie suspension within the huge cargo bay and the two enormous propellers present the breath-taking final stage of the two needed dives due the vast size of the wreck.
Cyprus is the destination where diving can be perfectly combined with surface activities. Water sports, of course: surfing, kitesurfing, sailing or SUP and more are widely available along the coast of Cyprus.
And if it comes to roads, gravel roads or mountainous single trails road bike and mountain biking is very popular on the Island of the Aphrodite. With perfect riding conditions and a myriad of designated routes to explore, there is no doubt that Cyprus is an island made for cycling Hobbyists, enthusiasts and professionals will all equally enjoy the thrill of new discoveries, breathtaking backdrops, the favourable Mediterranean climate, challenging surfaces. The best seasons for cycling are spring and autumn from February to June and September until the still warm December. Many signposted routes, very good bike stations and a hotel industry geared to the wishes of cyclists round off the offer for cyclists in Cyprus.
Cyprus has been known as a hiking destination for decades due to its forested heights of the Troodos Mountains, up to 2000 metres high, the rugged coastal landscape of the Akamas Peninsula or the sea cliffs of the south-eastern tip of Cyprus. The island simply has the best weather conditions and varied natural landscapes.
For some years now, Cyprus has also become better known as a destination for running. The pleasant climate with the best training conditions as early as February, the numerous marathon competitions, especially in spring, and the very long promenades along the coast delight runners of all kinds.
At the Boot trade fair in Düsseldorf from 21 - 29 January 2023, Cyprus will again be present in cooperation with Taucher.Net and is looking forward to welcoming interested visitors at its stand.
