Discover the Hunsfels quarry

Over the Whitsun weekend, we headed to the Hunsfels Quarry for the first edition of Diving Demo Days - a cooperative event between German and Polish diving media and manufacturers. The event is the prelude to a series of three events prepared by Taucher.Net together with the Polish magazine DIVERS24.

The second and third parts of the series will take place in July and September at the Sparmann and Hemmoor quarries. These are certainly great opportunities to get to know or relive these wonderful dive sites. In addition, you will see that the exhibitors have prepared a lot; taster dives with rebreathers included. Testing and getting to know new equipment is the main focus of the Demo Days.

At the first edition there were exhibitors from Germany - Aqor, Garmin, Nanight and Paralenz, from Poland - Mola Mola Wear, Hi-Max, Seaya, as well as from the Czech Republic - Divesoft and Malta - Malta Tourism Authority - together with Taucher.Net and DIVERS24. Despite the very changeable weather, the local diving community was very numerous. As we are currently in the middle of the event, it is difficult to draw a conclusion, but there are no dissatisfied people. There is a relaxed atmosphere on site which always encourages conversation and new acquaintances.

Hunsfels - About the area

Hunsfels Quarry is located in the southwest of Germany, in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, about 85 km from Frankfurt am Main. It is the most important diving area in the region and has existed for only 2 years. Until recently, the quarry was still active and limestone was mined here. However, in 2010, workers encountered a water vein during mining operations and the entire pit was flooded.

The local diving community decided to take advantage of this situation and began working to make the site accessible. Eventually they succeeded, and the region gained an intimate and very interesting dive site. The site looks very good both above and below water. The rocks surrounding the flooded quarry are quite high, lushly vegetated and inhabited by many species of birds, among others. The beautiful view and the surrounding nature form a wonderful composition that allows every visitor to relax before and after diving.

Both at the parking lot and at the lake there are many tables that facilitate the dressing of equipment. Heavier items such as tanks can be transported to the lake with the help of trolleys. Right at the entrance to the water, we have prepared a large, sturdy metal platform with a separate exit and descent. There is also a small outrigger and ropes with loops that allow prior clipping of stage bottles, scooters or cameras. A nice comfort that allows to comfortably get into the water and put on all the equipment there before going on a journey of discovery. Everything is supervised by the staff of Hunsfels Diving Center.

Diving in Hunsfels Quarry

The Hunsfels quarry is not huge, but it certainly takes more than 2 or 3 dives to get to know it really well. The maximum depth here is up to 54 meters. This makes the Hunsfels a body of water for all levels of experience.

Just like on the surface, there is no lack of vegetation and various rock formations underwater. These make every dive interesting. Visibility underwater varies. Up to a depth of about 15 m it is quite good. Unfortunately, this weekend at the next 10 m we have a milky layer with very little visibility. Below this depth, however, conditions are perfect and we can enjoy the underwater world to the fullest.

Our co-organizers and co-exhibitors from Poland were visiting Hunsfels for the first time and find the lake very attractive from a diving point of view - just like us. "It is certainly the kind of dive site that is missing in Poland. A very good infrastructure on the surface and a body of water that is attractive for divers from OWD level to advanced technical divers. The disadvantage is undoubtedly the long distance from Poland, but if you are in the area, it is worth to make a small stop and do a dive in Hunsfels," sums up Marcin Pawelczyk, chief editor of DIVERS24.

Already now a big thank you to the team of the Hunsfels Quarry for the active support and the warm welcome for the Demo Days 2022.
