Travel ban for tourists ends on February 4
Since the beginning of the current pandemic, the Indonesian island of Bali has not received tourists from other countries. In a few days, on February 4, this special kind of 'island quarantine' will now end and foreign guests will be allowed to enter again - but a five-day quarantine awaits them.
"This is to help revive Bali's economy, which has been badly affected by the pandemic," said the government's pandemic officer, Luhut Pandjaitan. However, visitors will not be able to move freely around the island immediately. The exact rules are probably still under discussion - but a short entry quarantine will probably be required. Currently the following is known: Those who have full basic protection will have to spend five days in quarantine in a hotel of their choice. Those who have only a primary vaccination must isolate themselves for seven days. No entry without vaccination.
The government decided to open despite Corona numbers rising for days because of the contagious Omikron variant. Bali depends on the important tourism industry, which is almost completely down since April 2020. In 2019, more than six million vacationers had still traveled to the island known for its temples, rice paddies and beaches. For diving vacationers, the island is a very special place with designated sites for macro lovers (muck diving) to the larger inhabitants of the sea such as manta rays.
Indonesia has long been the worst hit country in the region by Corona. As of Sunday, the Southeast Asian country had recorded more than 11,500 new infections. A total of about 4.3 million cases have been recorded so far in the country of 270 million people. According to reports from the Ministry of Health of Indonesia, more than 144,000 people have died in connection with Covid-19.
