A total of 34 divers participated with 30 of them travelling from Italy, Portugal, Spain, France, Hungary, Romania to take part specifically in this competition and to enjoy the many scuba diving sites Gozo and Comino offer. A panel of judges from UK and Malta judged the competitors’ photographs.

A side competition was also held of Safari Photo Fish Hunting, in collaboration with Italian and Spanish Federations officials as a test prior to presenting the sport for formal adoption as a sporting discipline under the CMAS Visual Commission.

Gozo has been voted as one of the best dive locations in the Mediterranean. Dive sites used where the Blue Hole and the new Azure Reef at Dwejra (Reef formed in march 2017 after the collapse of the Azure Window) and the Inland Sea. Dives were also held at Comino Lantern Point and at the P31 Wreck behind the Blue Lagoon.

The BDOM competition’s aim is to bring together local and International underwater photographers to compete together for the best set of photos in three categories:

Ambient – Wide Angle Photography
Macro (Non Fish) Photography
Macro (Fish) Photography

The Safari competition’s aims was for photographers to capture as much different fish species as possible, and in fact the top spotter identified 42 different fish species!

Fortunately, the weather was remarkably calm at the dive sites chosen, a far cry from last year’s edition when not a single full diving period was completed due to the weather situation.

The shore and seaborne teams from Emergency Response and Rescue Corps (Gozo) must be commended for their shore and on water support. Although they were not needed to intervene in an emergency, they provided peace of mind to the organisers should their assistance have been needed.

An Award ceremony was held in a hotel in Marsalforn on Sunday 21st October 2018,  during which competition prizes sponsored by Knight Divers, The Dive Warehouse, Salpa Sub, Scuba Supplies, Dive Systems, Easydive and Mares were presented to the photographers/athletes.

The Awards were presented by Ms. Esther Bajada on behalf of Eco-Gozo, Ministry for Gozo, Dr. Elayne Cutajar, FUAM President, Mr. Joe Cassar, MOC Secretary and representatives from the other sponsors.
