Underwater photo artist Gaby Fey in the Ringkirche in Wiesbaden
When Gaby Fey presses the shutter release, everyone holds their breath: The well-known photo artist creates works of art with performers under water. Her historical "compositions" are unique, for which she meticulously recreates and photographs icons of art history such as "The Raft of the Medusa" by Thédore Géricault and "Liberty Leads the People" by Eugène Delacroix, among others, in her pool in the South of France or in the Mediterranean. Her best-known work in this series is the large-scale work "La Cène" - her version of Leonardo da Vinci's "The Last Supper".
From Maundy Thursday, 6 April, to Pentecost Sunday, 28 May 2023, the Evangelische Ringkirche, Kaiser-Friedrich-Ring 7 in Wiesbaden, will be showing Gaby Fey's "La Cène". After the service with Pastor Dr. Stefan Reder on Easter Monday, 10 April, which begins at 10.00 a.m., the ceremonial opening of the picture presentation will take place: At 11.30 a.m. Mireille Jautz (Kunstexperiment Wiesbaden) will introduce the art of Gaby Fey, followed by the screening of the film "The Ruin of Exchange" (18 min.). Philipp Marguerre, member of the glass music ensemble "sinfonia di vetro", will provide the musical accompaniment, playing his glass harp.
On Sunday, 30 April, at 11.30 a.m., there will be an exchange of ideas between the artist Gaby Fey and the art representative of the Protestant Church in Hesse and Nassau (EKHN), Pastor Dr. Markus Zink, during a matinee in the Ringkirche. An interview with the artist is possible by appointment.

In addition to the above-mentioned events, further guided tours and discussion rounds are planned. On 15 May at 7 p.m., for example, there will be a discussion entitled "Art in the Crossfire" with Dr. Simone Husemann (Kath. Erwachsenenbildung Wiesbaden-Untertaunus und Rheingau) and Dr. Susanne Claußen (Fachstelle Bildung und Erwachsenenarbeit im Ev. Dekanat Wiesbaden).

Underwater Works by Gaby Fey
The production of Gaby Fey's detailed underwater works is highly complex. The production of "La Cène" alone took almost a year from start to finish. For example, a robe was made for each of the apostle actors by the haute couture tailor Helena Gubajdulin from Trier and then dyed.
How Gaby Fey stages the liquid wine sloshing out of a glass at the Last Supper, for example, remains her secret. Each of her works of art not only requires a lot of planning, creativity and precision in preparation, the underwater shoots also demand a lot from the actors. This is not least due to the fact that the artist and passionate diver Gaby Fey - as well as the performers - work under water "without equipment" - in other words, in apnoea.
About the artist
Gaby Fey first worked in front of the camera - as an internationally sought-after model. Already during this time her passion for photography and photographic composition grew. Years of working as a globally successful advertising photographer followed. But it was only in underwater photography that she was able to freely realise her artistic visions and consistently dedicate herself to the realisation of her own projects. Exhibitions in Germany, France, Monaco, Austria and Switzerland are proof of the interest in her work. In 2020, 2021 and 2022, for example, she exhibited at the Sylt Art Fair, and in 2021 she took part in NordArt in Büdelsdorf, one of the largest annual exhibitions of contemporary art, where all of her large-format works shown were bought by a North German collector. She will exhibit there again this year.
