Fish 'n Fins bundles hotel, diving and transfers
Ask experienced divers what went wrong on a big trip to a remote island, and the answer is rarely the diving itself. It is the pieces around it: the transfer that never arrived, the hotel that lost the booking, the dive boat moored an hour from where you are sleeping. Each of these seams can cost a day you flew halfway around the world to spend underwater.
On Palau, Fish 'n Fins aims to avoid exactly that. The operation in Malakal was founded in 1972, according to the company, and is the country's first dive center. It organizes the holiday under one roof: hotel, diving, tours and transfers can be booked in a single place and are carried out by the same team. This includes its own fleet of speedboats, private docks, a dive center, the Barracuda restaurant and the liveaboard Ocean Hunter.
In business terms, this is called vertical integration: one provider covers several steps of the service chain itself.
An ordinary dive holiday often looks like this: you land, look for your transfer, settle in, find the dive shop, sort out your gear, and hope that the boat and the weather cooperate. Each step is a gap through which a morning or an entire day of diving can slip. At Fish 'n Fins, according to the company, these steps collapse into one: you book once, you are picked up, your gear is already waiting, and the boat leaves from the operator's own dock, minutes from the hotel.
This matters most to guests who have traveled far for a few days underwater. Fish 'n Fins says it has not canceled a single day trip for technical reasons in decades. The company attributes this to spare capacity: it says it keeps more boats than the daily schedule requires (the website lists eleven boats), so a spare boat can step in if something goes wrong.
There is also the range. The company introduces beginners to the water and trains instructors; it is a PADI 5 Star Instructor Development Center. It also takes experienced divers to mantas, reef sharks, caves and Second World War wrecks. For longer trips, Fish 'n Fins operates the liveaboard Ocean Hunter. According to the operator, its offering includes gourmet cuisine and two Jacuzzis on the sun deck.
The concept is built on one team being responsible from the airport to the final safety stop. For divers who measure a holiday in bottom time rather than logistics, that can be an advantage.
Palau rewards those who arrive well prepared. Fish 'n Fins wants to leave as little as possible to chance.
