Treasure hunters discover historic coins and artifacts off the coast of Florida
During a diving expedition off the Atlantic coast of Florida, researchers have unearthed an impressive treasure: more than 1,000 gold and silver coins worth around one million euros. The team from the company “1715 Fleet – Queens Jewels, LLC” discovered the coins during seasonal search and recovery activities related to the legendary Plate Fleet from 1715.
The so-called stern coins were minted in the Spanish colonies of Mexico, Peru, and Bolivia. Some coins still bear clearly recognizable mint marks and dates, making them extremely interesting for historians and collectors. Historically, it is estimated that more than $400 million in gold, silver, and jewels sank in this storm disaster – an event that ranks among the greatest maritime disasters in American history.
Devastating storm
The fleet was on its way back to Spain when a devastating storm sank several ships in Cuba on July 24, 1715. Most of the ships sank within a radius of 80 kilometers, and the remains can be found in this area on the seabed. The area is now known as “Treasure Beach,” a treasure trove with undiscovered relics, including valuable jewels such as emerald rings.
The find contributes to further research into the history of the Spanish colonial period and the famous treasure fleet of 1715. The recovered artifacts will be preserved and exhibited in museums, with Florida retaining part of the finds for research purposes.
