Popular recreational area and diving site still closed due to danger of slope sliding
In March, there were strong slope slides in the Brandenburg Helenesee. The sharply fallen water level was suspected as the reason that a good 500cbm of shore areas slid. Two shore sides were completely closed after intensive investigations.
After the first slide in March, the State Office for Mining, Geology and Raw Materials had investigated the shore area of the lake. According to the assessment, further slides cannot be ruled out, so those shores have been closed as a precaution, the state office said. Because the lake is fed by groundwater, the water level is lower than it has probably ever been since it was flooded. Since it could not be ruled out that other shore areas were also affected and that there could therefore be a danger to the lives of those bathing or diving there, all of the 1350 meters of beach at Lake Helene were closed as a precaution. Since then, they may no longer be entered.
The state office's goal was to lift the closures as quickly as possible. Further intensive investigations of the shore areas were scheduled for April. Only then could it be decided whether individual areas could be reopened.
Helenesee remains closed
The hope of the tenant and all recovery-looking for such as divers, bathers and holiday-makers shattered now: The Helenesee near Frankfurt (Oder) remains further closed for safety reasons.
The closure was announced by the State Office for Mining, Geology and Raw Materials (LBGR) on August 03, 2021 after the presentation of an interim report. Investigations by experts had shown that in the already closed bank areas there are dangers due to 'liquefaction tendency and sediment flow/slope slidings'. The ordered closure of these areas therefore remains in place.
Until yesterday, there was still hope that at least individual sections of the beach on the Helene could be reopened. After extensive investigations and evaluations of the geotechnical conditions were carried out in June and July, the hazard assumptions for the entire shore area under consideration were confirmed, according to the authority.
Bathing and diving paradise in a landscape conservation area
Lake Helene, which covers a good 250 hectares and is up to 60 meters deep, is part of the Oder-Spree lake district, a landscape conservation area. The lake was created from the end of the 1950s from the former open-cast lignite mine Grube Helene after it was flooded. Due to the good water quality, the Helene is popular as a recreational area for water sports enthusiasts - here of course also for divers - and campers.
