Apnea record attempt at Dive4Life
On 12 January 2024, Daniel Weißhoff, founder of the Freediving Center Germany, certified freediving instructor and judge, is organizing a world record attempt in apnoea diving in the Dive4Life diving tower in Siegburg. The 40-year-old athlete wants to set a 'Record Holders Republic' world record in freediving everesting.
Everesting is known from the sports of running and cycling and is an activity in which cyclists or runners ascend and descend a specific mountain several times to cover a total of 8,848 meters (the height of Mount Everest).
The first "Everesting" candidate was the grandson of George Mallory, who had an accident on Everest in 1924 and whose remains were not found until 1999. The first attempt took place on Mount Donna Buang in 1994. The format and rules were set by Andy van Bergen, who was inspired by the story of Mallory's attempt. In the first official group attempt, van Bergen organized 65 participants, 40 of whom completed the Everesting attempt.
Everesting is a personal challenge, and as such there is no official committee: the only criterion is that 8,848 meters of altitude are completed in a single activity. The important thing here is that ascents and descents are counted. Everesting has different rules for different variants of the competition, some of which include sleep or longer rest breaks so as not to endanger the health of the candidates.
Freedive Everesting
Freedive Everesting" is therefore also about collecting altitude meters (8848 m) through individual dives. Ascents and descents are also counted here - i.e. descending and ascending. In the Dive4Life diving tower, Daniel Weißhoff wants to set this record with 222 dives to a depth of 20 m (222 times 20 depth meters times 2 (ascent and descent) = 8880 m). The record will be supervised and approved by a referee from the Record Holders Republic (Günter Bugl).
The world record attempt can be followed live on the Internet: www.freedive-everesting.de. Various freediving workshops will be offered as part of the supporting program.
