Biological diversity of the underwater world of the Red Sea
From July 6 to 13, 2023, the popular Extra Divers Science Days will take place again at Extra Divers El Quseir. Together with marine biologist Prof. Dr. Ralph Schill and the diving team of Extra Divers, diving guests of Mövenpick Resort EL Quseir will take an exciting adventure trip around the Red Sea.
Divers will enjoy guided dives on marine biology topics and marine biology lectures. The biological diversity of the underwater world of the Red Sea is the focus of the Extra Divers Science Days 2023.
At the Science Days, recreational divers will get an overview in varied lectures of, among other things, which new animals have been discovered in the Red Sea in recent years; how new animals are named and what they are called; the species of fish found in the bay; why corals, sponges, crabs and fish glow red during the day even in deep water without a diving lamp; how a coral reef is formed and then degraded; about the secrets of the sandy bottom habitat and the sand gap system; and what reef protection has to do with 3D printers. The Science Days are also hands-on and those who want to can discover the microcosm in the Red Sea with mini-microscopes; do fluorescence dives at night, but also during lunchtime; learn what it means to live under pressure; create a 3D model of a reef block and build a coral reef.
Personal details: Prof. Dr. Ralph Schill is a professor at the University of Stuttgart. As President of the Scientific Committee and member of the Board of Directors in the World Diving Federation CMAS (Confédération Mondiale des Activités Subaquatiques), he worked voluntarily for eight years with international organizations such as UNESCO and the International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI). On the board of VDST (Verband Deutscher Sporttaucher) he was responsible for Environment & Science for 16 years. He is founder of the non-profit organization www.aquatil.org and has been diving in El Quadim Bay for almost 20 years.
