ReefExporer online lecture series, Coral Reef Adventure 2025
On 17 July 2025 from 17:00 to 18:00, Prof. Dr. Nico Michiels from the Chair of Evolutionary Ecology of Animals and Evolution at the University of Tübingen will give the lecture ‘Documenting change in over 1000 fish species: A challenge with the joy of discovery’.
Register now free of charge for the lecture series (in German language) at: www.reefexplorer.org
Nico Michiels has been interested in marine fish biodiversity since 2007. He encourages diving enthusiasts to share their observations with online biodiversity initiatives. But identifying thousands of fish species ... how is that supposed to work?
The presentation shows how customised underwater photography, new diagnostic features, and an effective learning platform increase the ability to identify fish. As an example, a data set with >1000 fish species in North Sulawesi will be presented, including many rare species. Unfortunately, baseline data like this is largely missing. But they are essential in times of change. Look, discover, share: Meaning and joy in one.
