Underwater Citizen Science

Since fall 2024, Prof. Dr. Ralph Schill’s team- and especially thanks to your help—has been monitoring the Egyptian coast of the Red Sea. More and more Diadem sea urchins are now being observed, and we hope they will re-establish themselves along the entire coastline.

Ralph on the citizen science project to conserve the Diadem sea urchin: “With your support, we aim to investigate and document the disappearance and re-establishment of the Red Sea Diadem sea urchin (Diadema setosum).
As part of this large-scale citizen science project, we have already collected numerous reports and photos via our free app, which is available in five different languages.

Now it’s also very easy to use Dive4Diadema on your desktop—no matter where you are. Simply visit www.dive4diadema.org. All the app’s features and your login details are available there as well. You can also conveniently upload photos directly from your storage devices within the application and view the distribution maps even more clearly.”
