Search for surviving diademed sea urchins in the Red Sea

Following the mass extinction of diademed sea urchins (Diadema setosum) in the Red Sea, the international citizen science project ‘Dive4Diadema’ has launched a search for the last remaining animals.

This species of sea urchin, which used to be common everywhere, has almost disappeared from many coastal areas. Fortunately, some animals have resisted the deadly pathogen - and it is precisely in them that hope lies for a new future for their species and for the coral reefs.

On the house reef of The Breakers Diving and Surfing Lodge and the ORCA Dive Club Soma Bay, the team from the citizen science project ‘Dive4Diadema’ found a few diadem sea urchins during their search.
