Surprise on Negros
We never thought that our Christmas holiday (dec 25th2006-jan6th2007) would happen, due to illness and overbooking. Nevertheless we managed to book another holiday in a relatively unknown place: Negros, a dark sanded island of the Philippines. Dark sanded because of volcanic activities, hence the name: Negros means black. It is a rather quit island with very friendly inhabitants and no mass tourism. We liked that very much, easy going!
So were the dives and they were full of surprises. There is no direct house reef, but the distances to the dive sites were very short. Because we went in small groups, we could go by a rather speedy boat. The crew was very helpful and friendly, there was no stress and hurries.
The dive sites varied very much, from the classic coral reefs on rocky island as Sumilon Island and Apo Island. Here was an abundance of stone corals, soft corals and leather corals. You wil find colourful species of reef fisch as well as beautiful nudibranches and even mantaneeshrimps. Furthermore we saw seasnakes, turtles, big eyed trevalleys and many more.
The dive sites on the shoreside resembled in many ways those in Lembeh Street. We saw lots of frogfisches, leaffishes and ghostpipefishes, even four at a time in a featherstar! And what about a school of thousands of barracudas, just in front of the beach!!
One of the dive sites was really top of the bill: the Pier. You dive under the pier and oceanships. The pillars of the Pier are magnificently overgrown with extreme large soft corals, one of the largest we have seen. On a nightdive this looks as Brazilian Carnival. Don’t be surprised when you see four frogfisches on a spot! The bizarre marine species we’ve seen on this holiday were overwhelming, as much as larger species as micro animals. They all competed in colors and appearances.
We stayed in the Amontillado Beach & Dive Resort, a very nice resort near Dumaguete, just at the shore. The resort itself was in traditional style with equal styled, comfortable and neat apartments, surrounded by a beautiful garden. In the midst of it, you could enjoy in a nice and clear swimmingpool a lovely after-dive. And of course: diving makes (very) hungry and we were spoiled rotten by an excellent kitchen in a restaurant with a view on the beach and sea. Because is was a private beach, nobody could stare at you, while eating your favourite meal (shrimps in mango-brandy sauce). The staff was more than friendly and they spoiled us rotten as well. You could ask anything you liked, and if anything was not available, they were masters in improvising. They made us feel at home and very welcome. Even if you wanted difficult things, combining different land tours f.e., they made it possible and we had a wonderful trip! Therefore we would like to thank you very much because you made us a wonderful stay at your resort!
