Whales on our doorstep – the porpoises of the Baltic Sea
As part of the ReefExplorer Online Lecture Series, we are delighted to welcome Anja Gallus from the German Oceanographic Museum to give a talk on the porpoises of the Baltic Sea.
When: 9 July 2026 | 5.00–6.00 pm
Where: Online; registration via www.reefexplorer.org
Porpoises are the only whales that are permanently resident in German waters. Although they live right on our doorstep in the Baltic Sea, they usually go unnoticed. However, with the help of underwater microphones, these fascinating marine mammals can be tracked and studied. They use their high-frequency calls for navigation, communication and to locate their prey.
Anja Gallus has been dedicated to researching the native porpoise for more than twenty years. In her talk, she will provide fascinating insights into the work of the German Oceanographic Museum and demonstrate how a network of monitoring stations in the Baltic Sea helps to record the presence and seasonal distribution of these small toothed whales. In addition, participants will learn what insights studies of stranded porpoises provide into their diet, state of health and possible causes of death.
Join the ReefExplorer team on a fascinating journey of discovery into the world of Europe’s smallest whales and learn more about the challenges and opportunities involved in protecting them in our local seas.
