A unique underwater experience in Styria

The Erzberg Underwater Adventure 2026: This summer, the Erzberg in Styria is set to become a magnet for the diving community. For the first time, the imposing mine is opening its doors not only to mining enthusiasts, but also to divers and underwater photographers from across Austria and abroad.

During the summer weekends, selected divers will have the unique opportunity to dive in waters that have never been dived before – against the spectacular backdrop of the mine. The number of participants is strictly limited.

The “Erzberg Underwater Adventure” programme can now be booked exclusively through the „Alpenaquarium Grüblsee" diving centre. The centre has launched this programme in cooperation with the “Abenteuer Erzberg” adventure park. Accommodation and catering options are also available as part of the package on request.

First-ever access to the mine site for divers

The Erzberg in Styria is renowned far beyond Austria’s borders as an impressive mining site. Situated in one of the country’s most scenic areas, the Erzberg is now granting access to experienced divers for the first time – and for a limited period.

Every Saturday and Sunday throughout 2026, participants in the ‘Erzberg Underwater Adventure’ will have the opportunity to dive right in the heart of the mining site, against the unmistakable backdrop of the Erzberg. A maximum of 150 people can take advantage of this exclusive offer, which is expressly designed for experienced divers only (requirements: own equipment, dry suit, at least 100 completed dives).

The initiative is organised and supervised by the team at the nearby ‘Alpenaquarium Grüblsee’ diving centre in Vordernberg/Präbichl. Bookings for the ‘Erzberg Underwater Adventure’ programme can only be made through the Alpenaquarium Grüblsee, with prices starting at 100 euros.

Under the “Abenteuer Erzberg” brand, visitors can experience the past and present of Central Europe’s largest active opencast mine up close. With a visitor mine, Hauly rides and an open-air exhibition, the Styrian “Brotlaib” offers a range of extraordinary attractions. As the venue for international events such as the Erzberg Rodeo or the Erzberg Adventure Days, the mine attracts thousands of visitors to the region every year.

Special offer for the diving community

The programme is specifically aimed at divers seeking exceptional dive sites and wishing to experience the Erzberg from a perspective that has previously been accessible to very few. For underwater photographers in particular, this presents a rare opportunity to capture extraordinary images that combine diving scenes with the mining atmosphere and the Erzberg’s world-famous “stepped pyramid”.

The complete Erzberg experience, above and below water

The diving adventure can easily be combined with other highlights at the Erzberg.
Once their booking has been confirmed, participants have the option to extend their visit to a complete “Erzberg Experience”.

The package includes, for example, a tour on the powerful 1215-PS Hauly, a guided tour of the exhibition mine and a visit to the Oswaldirücken open-air exhibition. This makes it possible to explore the fascinating world of the Erzberg both above and below the water’s surface. Details of the tourist attractions at the Erzberg can be found at www.abenteuer-erzberg.at.

Information about the Alpenaquarium Grüblsee

Twenty-three years ago, Robert Marschnig founded and established the “Alpenaquarium Grüblsee”, complete with a diving centre, in the heart of Austria at Präbichl in Styria. The professional diving school is one of the few diving centres in Styria and offers a comprehensive programme for all age groups, ranging from taster dives to diving instructor training.

With its unique underwater petting zoo, the facility delights beginners and professionals alike. But the reservoir offers more than just diving fun: right within the diving centre is a restaurant serving culinary highlights ranging from light snacks to a five-course meal.

Those wishing to stay a little longer – perhaps to explore the Erzberg adventure – can book modern holiday flats in Vordernberg through the Alpenaquarium Grüblsee, managed by Sabine and Robert Marschnig.
