From fascinating sea dweller to delicacy
The catch of octopus in the world's oceans is rapidly decreasing, while their consumption is increasing. The result is the opening of the world's first octopus farm. This causes great concern...
The world's first octopus farm is to be built in Spain. There, one million of these highly intelligent creatures would be crammed into tiny tanks every year and then torturously killed by freezing them alive. Plans for this gigantic octopus torture chamber were already submitted to local authorities last year in Spain
Because of their almost mystical appearance, their three hearts or their ability to visually adapt to their surroundings in seconds, octopuses are considered by many people to be extremely fascinating sea creatures.
Animal rights activists and scientists are outraged
As worthy of protection as they are for some, they are just as tasty for many others. The demand for pulpo - as the lean, slightly sweet meat of the most intelligent of the molluscs is also called - is constantly increasing. At the same time, octopus fishermen's yields have been falling in recent years.
The Spanish company Nueva Pescanova - the country's largest fishing group - is now offering a controversial solution to expand the supply of the coveted delicacy: The world's first commercial octopus fam is to be built in the port of Las Palmas on Gran Canaria. Marketing of the first products from the octopus farm is to begin before the end of this year.
Octopuses have never been farmed commercially before and, according to experts, it is not possible to do so without causing untold suffering to these animals, which are among the most amazing creatures on earth.
But that hasn't stopped a Spanish company from planning a facility on the Canary Islands that would be tantamount to a giant octopus torture chamber. But there is hope: the UK has already recognised octopuses and other aquatic species as sentient beings and the EU is now considering similar legislation.
These fascinating creatures need a voice - and we can give it to them. Let's gather hundreds of thousands of votes from around the world to put pressure on the Spanish authorities just before the regional elections. That way we can stop the farm and call on the governments of the EU and the world: Ban the cruel octopus farm!
