What fascinates me about cave diving?

You can't get any lonelier in the world!

Water in itself is fascinating and the underwater worlds especially so. Every diver knows that and for many of them this is what makes diving so fascinating. Normally, one dives more or less in waters that are on the surface of the earth. But what does an underwater landscape look like underground, i.e. in caves?

Rainwater and melt water seep into the earth and form underground passage systems. Rivers rise deep underground or lakes are connected to underground passage systems and feed them with their water. On its long journey underground, the water is filtered and purified and emerges somewhere on the surface. Thus, the water in caves is usually crystal clear. Labyrinthine cave systems, sometimes as narrow, sometimes as wide passages, as large halls and narrowest cavities, with smoothly polished surfaces or jagged rocks with a bizarre appearance have formed over millions of years and are just as fascinating as the clarity of the water present there.

"I am completely with myself..."

It is quiet there under the earth, cold and dark. Access to a cave is often difficult and strenuous, but there is nothing of the hustle and bustle of the surface world there. Jan Holland, who specialises in diving in such places, explains his passion like this: "You can't get any lonelier in the world! - In a positive sense, I am lonely down there and completely with myself (apart from the buddy who accompanies me). Of course, I don't just walk into the underworld. What may seem spontaneous is always the result of lengthy, conscientious preparatory work. When I immerse myself in the world of a particular cave, I am precisely prepared for this environment and feel my way on site step by step."

Whether Jan dives in lakes, rivers or the sea, or dives underground into cave systems, the most important thing for him is always that he does not pollute nature and the environment. The only things Jan brings us back from his adventures are fascinating pictures and videos.
