The Vrak – Museum of Wrecks opened in September 2021 and is part of the National Museums of Maritime, Transport, and Defense History. The museum aims to become a leading destination for maritime cultural heritage in Sweden and Northern Europe and has been nominated for the European Museum of the Year Award 2024.

We are delighted to be nominated for Museum of the Year and see this as clear recognition of our work to bring the fascinating and little-known cultural heritage of the Baltic Sea to a broad and curious audience,” says Odd Johansen, director of the Vrak Museum.

The jury's reasoning

The Vrak – Museum of Wrecks transforms the hidden history of the Baltic Sea into a living and accessible cultural heritage. Visitors experience a unique combination of research, immersive technology, and storytelling that allows them to explore a maritime world that few ever get to see.

The museum shows how innovative, ethical, and sustainable conservation can be designed in new ways to preserve our shared heritage. At the same time, it promotes inclusive working methods that create space for a broader spectrum of voices and inspire stakeholders beyond the museum. Through innovation, sustainability, and participation, the museum is leading the way into the future of cultural heritage practice.
