Dive to a historical wreck

Schwerin is not only the capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, but also the oldest city in the northern state, which was first mentioned in 1018. Today, in addition to the most famous landmark, Schwerin Castle, there are also 12 lakes in the city area. The largest of them is Lake Schwerin, which is divided into the so-called inner and outer lake.

The flora and fauna in Schwerin Lake is quite rich in species. But also sunken relics of human origin characterize the waters. In addition to modern sport and sailing boats, there is also a wreck whose age is estimated at over 100 years. It is a nearly 27m long cargo sailer, which lies upright in front of the island Ziegelwerder in a depth of 18 meters.

In terms of construction, it is a ‘coffee barge’, which has a typical long raised bow. Directly behind the foredeck there is still a well-preserved windlass, which presents itself especially as a photo motif. If one continues to follow the hull, the still upright 7 meter high mast becomes directly visible. After several meters towards the stern, one discovers the collapsed superstructure of the cabin. The end of the stern is formed by the very imposing 3.5 meter long rudder blade with its very massive tiller. Unfortunately, the hull is silting up more and more, so that the ship's side is only visible about half a meter above ground.

Especially in late autumn and in the winter months, Lake Schwerin rewards with good to very good visibility; more than 10 meters are not uncommon. With the appropriate cold-water equipment, a dive at this beautiful historic wreck is always worthwhile.

Raben Steinfeld is home to the dive center Kosie's D.I.V.E. Center. With a perfectly equipped dive boat you can reach this dive site in less than 15 minutes. Due to the bird protection of the nearby island, the descent to the wreck does not take place directly, but offshore at a specially placed buoy. A guide rope then leads the diver under water directly to the wreck. Especially in the summer months when visibility is very low, this is a very popular way to find the wreck.
