A diving mask not just for underwater photographers

At first, the mask seems a little heavy to me, but this is probably due to the size, as the mask body is slightly larger than the masks I normally wear when taking photographs underwater. As an underwater photographer, the black mask body naturally suits me, as the incidence of light from a transparent mask body disturbs me when taking photos. The light reflections from sunlight coming in at an angle from above make it more difficult to recognise the image in the viewfinder or on the monitor.

The first impression after putting it on is positive. Less heavy than I thought. The mask fits well and the mask strap can be fastened quickly and easily. It also doesn't pinch at the back of the head or twist. The strap is made of thick silicone and seems to be quite sturdy. Mask straps that are too thin tear more easily. That shouldn't be the case here so quickly.
As soon as I dive in, I immediately notice that the sealing lip seems to be perfect for my very pronounced mouth wrinkles. Normally, I have to blow out a little first, because most masks don't fit me perfectly directly on the surface. Here, however, I have the feeling that the sealing lip is in place and no water gets in. It's a pleasant feeling not to have to blow it out.

During the dive, I take photos as usual and the mask feels as if I've always worn it. According to the manufacturer, I should burn out the mask before using it for the first time. This is a super thin layer of silicone on the inside that is created during the production process. This must be removed, otherwise the mask will constantly fog up. The silicone layer can be removed with a toothbrush and toothpaste. Alternatively, you can use cola instead of toothpaste or burn it out with a lighter and then clean it with toothpaste or cola. If you want to do it professionally, you can also buy a specially designed cleaning agent (Sea Buff).

I forgot to do this and am surprised that the routine process of "spitting in" and rubbing seems to be absolutely sufficient. The mask does not tarnish. Only after I stretch my head extremely while taking a photo does a small amount of water run into the mask through the folds at the corners of my mouth. However, half a shot glass of water is blown out again in a matter of seconds without any problems.

The second and third dives - all at a depth of just a few metres - also went without a hitch and I was very impressed with the mask. Let's see how it behaves at greater depths. Normally there should be fewer problems, as masks tend to have problems at shallower depths. But I will test it anyway. More on this topic will follow!
