Listening for the Ocean’s Deepest Divers
On May 15, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., the ReefExplorer team invites you to an exciting look into acoustic research in the deep sea. The guest speaker is Prof. Dr. Simone Baumann-Pickering from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (UC San Diego), a leading international expert in the field of marine bioacoustics.
Beaked whales are among the deepest divers in the world’s oceans and spend most of their lives at great depths—beyond our direct range of observation. Studying them therefore presents scientists with unique challenges.
The lecture demonstrates how passive acoustic methods, particularly the use of underwater microphones, enable new access to these hard-to-reach habitats. By “listening,” behaviors such as hunting, navigation, and communication can be analyzed, while simultaneously drawing conclusions about habitat use and ecological relationships.
Furthermore, the presentation will examine the impacts of oceanographic changes and increasing anthropogenic noise on these sensitive species—a topic of growing importance for global marine conservation.
The lecture is aimed at anyone interested in marine research, biodiversity, and the sustainable protection of marine ecosystems.
