ReefExporer online lecture series: Your coral reef adventure in 2025
Latest information 7 September 2025: The lecture by PD Dr Michael Stachowitsch (University of Vienna) entitled ‘Diving tourism in the reef: loving to death?’ has unfortunately had to be postponed from Thursday, 18 September to Thursday, 2 October. The Reef Explorer team hopes that this new date is convenient for everyone interested. As usual, you will receive the invitation link to the online lecture by email shortly before the event.
On September 18, 2025 Thursday, 2 October 2025, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., PD Dr. Michael Stachowitsch from the University of Vienna will give a lecture entitled “Diving tourism in the reef: loving to death?” (German language lecture!)

Michael Stachowitsch has managed to build a career as an independent marine biologist in a landlocked country. Raised in the US (graduated from the University of Pittsburgh), he wrote his doctoral thesis and habilitation on the northern Adriatic Sea in Vienna.
His research interests range from oxygen crises to sea turtles, coral reefs (including many years of field courses in the Red Sea) and beach litter.
In addition to dozens of articles in international journals, this breadth is reflected in books such as “The Invertebrates: An Illustrated Glossary” and “Mülleimer Strand” (Trash Can Beach). Dr. Stachowitsch is Austria's representative to the International Whaling Commission, a scientific English editor and translator, and lectures at the University of Vienna.
