Your coral reef adventure 2025, ReefExporer online lecture series
On August 14, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Jenny Krutschinna from Reef Check Deutschland e.V. and Opel Zoo will give a lecture entitled “Reef Check: A global network for the protection of coral reefs”: As the daughter of a captain, marine biologist Jenny Krutschinna's enthusiasm for the oceans was instilled in her from an early age. She has now been working with coral reefs for over 30 years and has been actively involved in their protection with Reef Check Germany since 2001.
Reef protection network with a wide range of activities
What impact do humans have on coral reefs? How can this impact be measured in a comparable way worldwide, and how can local communities use this knowledge to protect “their” reefs? Based on these questions, reef scientists developed the unique Reef Check method for observing coral reefs back in 1997. At the same time, an initiative of the same name was launched, which has grown into a global reef protection network with a wide range of activities.
Designed from the outset as a citizen science project, Reef Check is based on collaboration between scientists and “laypeople.” Among other things, people are trained as “Reef Check EcoDivers” to assess the condition of reefs worldwide. The data collected over more than 25 years can be analyzed and used by international organizations.
Activities to raise awareness of the central importance of the reef ecosystem and its fascinating diversity are also part of Reef Check's work to win over as many people as possible, even far away from the reefs, to protect these increasingly endangered “oases of the seas.”
