Ship hit a reef
In the night from 30 to 31 October, the Seawolf Felo (Liveaboard) collided with a reef. According to initial information, the ship is damaged; it is not yet known to what extent a rescue operation is possible.
On Sunday night (30 October), the Felo, a Seawolf Fleet Liveaboard, hit the reef Shabrour Suyl near Abu Nuhas. There are no reports of serious personal injuries. There were probably some minor injuries, but no concrete information is available yet (see Monday & Tuesday updates below). Contact is very difficult due to the poor telephone/internet network in the south.
The guests were able to transfer to another liveaboard (Aphrodite) and are currently being picked up by the Seawolf liveaboard staff. There is no further detailed information available yet.
Update from Monday evening, 31 October
Around 10pm, the group arrived at the Seawolf base and were fed. Some minor injuries were then treated or checked at the hospital. A small cut, a broken toe and a slight concussion were treated. The diving equipment was saved thanks to Mustafa and Sameh. Shirts, jackets and hygiene products were provided by the Seawolf team. All in all, the accident went very smoothly. As far as the fate of the Felo is concerned, everything is still open. However, the situation seems to be complicated and a salvage operation to save the ship is not assured.
Update Tuesday, 1 November
The Seawolf team posted a fishing boat at the damaged Felo as a night watch from Monday to Tuesday. This was to prevent looting or vandalism. Today, Tuesday, another team was sent out to reconnoitre the situation and take up-to-date pictures; after it was determined that there was a good chance of salvaging the Felo, 2 trucks full of empty barrels (as a replacement for lifting bags - Cici's quote: "Necessity is the mother of invention") were procured and delivered today. The rescue operation for the Felo will therefore start as soon as possible. We wish Cici and her team the very best and all fingers are crossed that the Felo can be recovered and restored.
Update Wednesday, 9 November
The Felo could be stabilised quite well with the help of air buoys. The entire hull was lifted a good two metres out of the water with the help of the buoys.
The Felo then practically floated in front of the reef and was first towed by a day boat chartered by Seawolf. The brand-new ship of the Seawolf fleet - the Steel, which was on its way to a northern safari, was also deployed and the Felo was towed to an offshore area that is only a few metres deep. The ship is to be lifted tomorrow (Cici's short and concise comment: "Inshalla"). We will continue to report on the progress of the salvage operation.
