World record in Dynamic Apnea

The 48-year-old free-diving athlete André Grabs from Freiburg still had something to proove this year. Today, the 3rd of October 2020, he broke a new world record in dynamic diving without fins - in continuous rain in the Moosweiher in Freiburg / Landwasser. Apnea diving means diving with only one breath and without a air tank. Already some years ago André set this record to a disctance of 130m, until he was beaten by Thomas Plum from Stuttgart by one meter.

Under the eyes of the press, only some spectators due to the horrible weather and the official judges of the international competition association AIDA, André Grabs managed the enormous distance of 135m.

The distance diving in the lake is a separate category in the official German regulations, which is divided into the disciplines with and without fins. Unlike in a swimming pool, the cold water, the poor visibility and the fluctuating dive depth are a big challenge, which makes the dive more difficult. But with his 2:54 min dive he not only set a new German record, but also the world record in distance diving in open water, without fins.

André Grabs belongs to the apnea group around the record diver and author Nik Linder, who normally trains in the Freiburg swimming pools. Due to the corona restrictions and the closed swimming pools, André Grabs trained more in the lake this year and was able to prepare himself perfectly for this open water record.

Probably on Monday evening the SWR Landesschau (local german TV) will report about the record at 18:45.
