The liveaboard vessel M/Y New Dream, formerly named M/Y Orion, has sunk

On 7 June, the liveaboard ship M/Y New Dream, formerly M/Y Orion, was involved in an accident. The ship was on its way to Marsa Alam. The reason given for the night voyage to Marsa Alam was that one of the divers on board was reportedly showing signs of decompression sickness. It was decided to take her immediately to Marsa Alam for treatment.

At around 1am, the M/Y New Dream ran onto a reef about 3hrs from Marsa Alam. The ship leaked and sank to the edge of the upper deck within a few minutes. No distress call was made, nor were any signal rockets fired. No one was aware of the accident at the time. An EPIRB was probably not activated. The divers and crew boarded the two Zodiacs of the New Dream and waited near the wreck for help. Few personal belongings could probably be taken with them.

Help from the M/Y Enjoy

Around 5am, the M/Y Enjoy was on its way to a new dive site to conduct the last two dives of the current tour. Distantly, SOS light signals could be perceived, which were probably sent with the lamps of the damaged divers. After the Enjoy had approached the site of the accident with its dinghies, it could be seen that all divers plus crew were completely seated in the Zodiacs of the New Dream. All were brought to the Enjoy.

The rescued divers quickly expressed the wish to return to the New Dream to recover personal belongings. According to crew members, this was partly successful. The crew of the Enjoy only learned of the alleged decompression accident in passing, with the indication that the symptoms here had meanwhile set in of their own accord. Fortunately, no further treatment was necessary. The Enjoy then started the return journey to Marsa Alam with everyone involved. After about 3 hours, the port of Marsa Alam was reached.

A crew member of the New Dream, who first informed us about the accident, would like to send a special thank you to the crew of the M/Y Enjoy: "Thank you - you contributed significantly to the rescue by your quick intervention and sacrificed the last diving day of your guests for us. Thank you so much!"
