XTAR D30 1600 Diving Lamp

We are once again on the road to test a small new dive lamp in deeper regions with rebreathers. This time we have the compact little XTAR D30 1600 with us. It is a diving lamp that is designed for diving depths of up to 100 meters. We don't go quite that deep, because for most divers, recreational depth is relevant. However, to test whether the switch and the locking mechanism still work at greater than recreational depths, we targeted 50 meters as the maximum depth.

The lamp fits well in the hand and can still be stowed away easily in smaller pockets. Somewhat unusual is the rotary knob to avoid accidental switching on. With the thick dry diving gloves a little bit of practice before diving is a good idea; this way we avoid operational problems during the dive. To switch on, the lock must point forward in direction to the control LED. A short press on the switch is enough to switch the lamp to the highest level. Two more presses and the lamp reduces the power by one level at a time.

If you want to switch the lamp to the three possible color variants, a longer press is necessary in each case. First, the lamp switches to red. The red LEDs are still relatively bright, the blue LEDs are already a bit less bright, but still sufficient to illuminate an object in blue. The UV setting is already relatively dark and hardly suitable for photography. However, to find a fluorescent object, the UV LEDs are sufficiently strong. However, you need a yellow filter for the mask to fully exploit the effect. One interesting feature is the option to combine the lamp with red, blue or UV light even with the white LED switched on by additional long press. This makes the red and blue effect much brighter, but also whiter. The UV effect, on the other hand, is no longer perceptible.

For us it was important to see how the lamp behaves in cold water and during long dives. With the rebreathers, we could also test the lamp on longer excursions and see how it behaves at depth. It was important to me to see if the switch or latch could be operated with thick gloves and cold fingers. Although I was very critical of the small rotary-push switch before the dive, I must correct myself and found that it was still easy to operate even with dry diving gloves and clammy fingers. Battery life also remained well over an hour despite being in water that was only 4 degrees. As small and compact as the light is, it did its job well.
