Holidaymaker died after shark attack
A fatal shark attack occurred on the beach of the Dream Beach Hotel, Russian media reported. It involved a 23-year-old holidaymaker, according to the reports.
In an interview, Russian Consul General in Hurghada Viktor Voropayev told Russian news agency TASS that the deadly attack occurred today, Thursday 8 June 2023. "The 23-year-old V.Popov, a Russian citizen, died as a result of the shark attack," he said, identifying the victim, a freelance illustrator who lived outside Moscow.
Footage circulating on social media shows hotel staff asking swimmers to leave the water as the shark's fin approaches. Popov is then seen being attacked by the shark and pulled underwater. Witnesses reported that rescue workers tried to save Popov, but by the time they got there, Popov was already dead.
The shark has since been caught and killed. According to reports from Hurghada, it is currently forbidden to enter the water.
Even though shark attacks are very rare worldwide and sharks also very rarely hunt for food on the shore, there are some clues as to why this may have happened here. A resident of Hurghada who works in tourism says: "The problem is that we throw sheep carcasses into the sea, which then wash up on the shore. This brings the sharks closer because the food is closer to the shore. In addition, I know that some local divers also hand-feed sharks. This is how sharks associate humans with food. Also, they follow the sound and sight of boats because they know they will find food there (because we are constantly trying to attract fish and sharks for tourists)."
