Online Lecture in the ReefExplorer Lecture Series

Orcas (Orcinus orca) are among the most fascinating and, at the same time, most complex marine mammals in our oceans. As apex predators, they play a central role in marine ecosystems—and yet, to this day, we know surprisingly little about how these animals communicate, hunt, and interact with their environment.

In the free online lecture series ReefExplorer, Prof. Dr. Volker Deecke offers exciting insights into his current research:

Date:
March 19, 2026, from 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM

Online & free

In the lecture “High-Tech Research on Orcas: Behavior, Communication, and Hunting,” Prof. Dr. Deecke presents innovative research methods, including the use of modern digital tags. These technologies make it possible to study in detail the behavior of mammal-hunting and fish-eating orcas in the Northeast Pacific.

Participants will gain insights into:
▪️ Communication strategies of orcas
▪️ Hunting behavior and prey search
▪️ Effects of underwater noise on key life processes
▪️ The significance of these findings for the protection of orcas and their habitats

The lecture is aimed at anyone interested in marine research, species conservation, and modern scientific methods.
