Happy Birthday, Hans!
Hans Hass – for some he was a diving pioneer, for others a scientist who dared to jump into the water and explore the then unknown depths. It was always important to him to transform his impressions, experiences, and images into exciting stories and to show others that part of our world that remains hidden to many.
“I was and always am on the lookout for new things, for things that others don't do,” he once said, explaining the success of his work.
Today, Hans Hass (1919–2013), the Austrian diving pioneer and underwater filmmaker, would have turned 107. Let's raise a glass to him—far away from the sea, but in a place he cherished: Düsseldorf.
He was here for the last time in 2009, celebrating his 90th birthday at boot Düsseldorf and the Aquazoo Löbbecke Museum. His award-winning film “Unternehmen XARIFA” premiered in Düsseldorf in 1954, underscoring his close scientific and media ties to the city. Since 2021, the diving history collection has been on permanent loan to the Düsseldorf Film Museum.
