Experience Earth with a report on the most beautiful and exciting lakes
With the start of the swimming season in Germany, ARD is presenting a fascinating film about the most beautiful and exciting lakes in our country on its ‘Erlebnis Erde’ programme (first broadcast: Erlebnis Erde, ARD, 2 June 2025, 8:15 p.m.).
Bubbling gases in the volcanic lakes of the Eifel, geological features at the deepest point of Lake Constance, old car wrecks and diving paradises – whether created by glaciers or human intervention, Germany's lakes are diverse, exciting and invite you on fascinating expeditions.
„Eintauchen ins tiefe Blau – Deutschland Seen“ (‘Diving into the deep blue – Germany's lakes’) takes viewers on an exciting journey from the alpine waters in the south to the most beautiful lakes in the north. The focus is on the secrets of the Vulkaneifel, the spectacular underwater worlds captured by award-winning underwater photographer Tobias Friedrich, and the musical accompaniment by renowned artist Dominik Eulberg.
The film takes us underwater again and again: from the Frillensee, Germany's coldest swimming lake in Upper Bavaria, to the deep, unexplored waters of Lake Constance. This is followed by the Müritz in the north-east and the mysterious crater lakes and maars in the Eifel. With the help of underwater cameras and an innovative drone, we dive into a world that has hardly been documented before, where hidden animal life and impressive remains of human civilisations are revealed. Particularly impressive: Jan Haft's team was able to explore the deepest point in German waters – in Lake Constance, at a depth of 251 metres.
The film explains how the lakes were formed and relates them to the surrounding landscape. The geological and zoological features are presented through fascinating stories – such as the mysterious crayfish in disappearing lakes, the purple sulphur-eating creatures and the rich life of pike, sticklebacks and the ancient burbot, which has been native to our deep, clear lakes since the Ice Age.
