The invasive bullfrog and strategies for water protection
From September 25 to 28, aquatil will be in Friedrichshafen to present its new project for combating the invasive bullfrog. These frogs, which can grow up to 20 cm in size, and their fist-sized tadpoles have been threatening the native wildlife of the Upper Rhine for years.
Prof. Dr. Ralph Schill, initiator of the project, explains: "Together with dedicated recreational divers, we are developing strategies to curb their spread and protect the biological diversity of our waters. At the aquatil stand, you can immerse yourself in the fascinating world of our native lakes, learn why invasive species are a problem, and experience how citizen science works underwater. Our new booklet ‘Bullfrog Knowledge’ is now available, which you can pick up from us free of charge. We look forward to exciting encounters in Friedrichshafen!"
Background information
The “Ochsenfrosch-Bekämpfung in BW” (Bullfrog Control in BW) project is being carried out by Aquatil gGmbH under the direction of Prof. Dr. Ralph Schill from the University of Stuttgart. It includes telemetry studies, the use of sniffer dogs, a symposium, and an information brochure. It is financed by earmarked proceeds from the GlücksSpirale lottery. Further information is available on the Internet at the following address: stiftung-naturschutz-bw.de/../ochsenfroschbekaempfung
The control of invasive species is also an important issue at the European level. Regulation (EU) No. 1143/2014 regulates the prevention and management of the introduction and spread of invasive alien species.
