Insights into the ecology and conservation of marine habitats
Sea turtles spend the vast majority of their lives in the sea. Nevertheless, for many decades, conservation efforts have focused primarily on their nesting beaches. By contrast, the habitats they use between nesting periods – from seagrass beds and coral reefs to the open ocean – have long been the subject of significantly less research.
In her lecture, Dr Christine Figgener (Costa Rican Alliance for Sea Turtle Conservation and Science – COASTS & ProMar e.V.) provides fascinating insights into more than 20 years of field research and conservation work in Costa Rica. Drawing on long-term studies and illustrative case studies, she will explain why sea turtles are excellent indicators of the health of marine ecosystems and what insights they provide for the protection of our oceans.
The talk is aimed particularly at divers, nature enthusiasts and anyone who not only wishes to observe sea turtles but also to gain a better understanding of their ecological significance and the close connection between coastal and marine habitats.
As always, attendance is free of charge.
