The big hatch
Kagi Maldives Spa Island has celebrated the first turtle hatching day of the season - the birth of 123 sea turtles.
Out of the egg and off to the sea: the hatching of baby turtles is a natural spectacle of a very special kind. Countless animal babies make their way into the sea. Almost the entire beach, littered with scampering little sea turtles, eager to plunge into the tides.
Egg-laying of the sea turtles
At night, the adult sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. The mothers use their flippers to scoop a hollow. There they lay about 50 to 200 eggs. Afterwards, the eggs are covered with sand before the sea turtle returns to the sea.
According to statistics, the incubation period of sea turtle eggs in the Maldives lasts between 49 and 62 days.
Guests, staff and team members of Euro-Divers Kagi Maldives were delighted when they gathered together on the beach on the first hatching day of the season to witness this fascinating natural event.
The resort's "green" team carefully helped 123 hawksbill turtle hatchlings on their first trip to the sea on Tuesday, June 15, 2021, the day before WWF's World Sea Turtle Day.
The hawksbill sea turtle is one of seven sea turtle species worldwide. It inhabits coral reefs and various other habitats such as rocky underwater landscapes, lagoons and shallow coastal areas. Although the hawksbill sea turtle is widespread, it is unfortunately threatened with extinction due to human impacts.
For this very reason, the event that the Euro-Divers Kagi Maldives team was able to witness is wonderful news.
