On Cozumel, one of the most popular dive islands in the Caribbean, a planned infrastructure project is currently sparking massive opposition. Mexican authorities are reviewing the approval of a fourth cruise ship pier, proposed to be built in the area of Villa Blanca Reef, a sensitive and extensively restored reef just south of San Miguel.
The project, filed under reference MIA 23QR2020H0047, aims to increase the island’s cruise ship capacity by constructing another docking facility. However, a significant portion of the reef would be destroyed or paved over – including areas where over 400,000 corals have been replanted in the past decade as part of the Cozumel Coral Reef Restoration Program (CCRRP).
Villa Blanca Reef is not only a popular dive site with high biodiversity, but also a symbol of successful reef restoration. Accordingly, the backlash has been strong: numerous local dive centers, environmental organizations, and international divers are calling for the project to be stopped immediately. One particularly active hub is the Cozumel4You community, where locals and divers exchange updates, organize, and protest.
At the same time, a petition on change.org titled “No necesitamos una 4ta terminal” has already gathered over 11,000 signatures. The CCRRP itself is also calling for support – through donations, awareness, and volunteer engagement.
Conclusion:
The proposed pier would be a major setback for conservation efforts and a blow to everyone who has worked for years to protect and restore Cozumel’s reefs. The diving community now has a chance to take a stand – before another part of the underwater world is sacrificed for mass tourism.
