ReefExplorer online lecture series - Your coral reef adventure 2025
Dive into the fascinating world of coral reefs! On 8 May 2025 from 17:00 to 18:00, Prof. Dr Christian R. Voolstra from the Department of Biology at the University of Konstanz and President of the International Coral Reef Society (ICRS) will give the lecture ‘Coral reefs in climate change - ways out of ecological collapse’.
The coral reefs of our oceans are on the brink of ecological collapse. The main driver of reef destruction is coral bleaching - the breakdown of the symbiosis between the coral host and its endosymbiotic algae - which is triggered by the warming of the oceans. The now annual global occurrence of coral bleaching exacerbates the need to develop strategies to mitigate the destructive effects of climate change.
This seminar (in german language) will highlight the causes, impacts and efforts being made to identify ecological, biological and environmental factors that increase coral stress resilience.
