„Living for the ocean": Society for the Rescue of Dolphins e.V. and colorswell cooperate for animal protection

On the occasion of the Ocean Day, the Society to Save the Dolphins (GRD - Gesellschaft zur Rettung der Delphine e.V.) and colorswell announce a cooperation under the motto "Live for the ocean / For a better life“ (Editors’ note: A play on words with a double meaning in the German language). Together they produce bracelets in limited edition, from fishing nets.

According to estimates, about 5000 to 10000 fishing nets end up in the Baltic Sea every year. There they represent a great danger for marine animals, which get entangled in the nets and die in agony. Especially for the Baltic harbor porpoise, which is threatened with extinction according to the IUCN Red List, the lost nets are usually a death sentence.

In addition, the ghost nets are made of various plastics, which pollute the Baltic Sea with plastic and microplastics. The resulting consequences are still uncertain for fauna, flora and us humans.

A collaboration for the ocean

The cooperation of the two Munich initiatives wants to take action against this and do its part against the pollution of the oceans and the threat to biodiversity. The Munich dolphin conservationists recover the fishing net from the Baltic Sea together with other partners. colorswell then designs an accessory from the former ghost nets that makes an unmistakable statement on the wrist for the urgently needed protection of our seas.

The cooperation partners got to know each other at the Heldenmarkt in Munich in 2019 and since then colorswell supports the important work of the Society to Save the Dolphins and marine conservation with the sale of their accessories.

Since the end of 2019, the GRD has been recovering ghost nets from the Baltic Sea off the island of Rügen in cooperation with the Prora diving center. They are supported in their important mission by participants of the German Postcode Lottery.

colorswell uses a ghost net weighing about 800 kilograms, which was recovered from the Baltic Sea by the Munich-based dolphin and marine conservation organization together with the Prora diving center in July 2020.

The goal of the campaign

To draw attention to the man-made threat is the goal of the campaign. Ghost nets must be recovered and made harmless for the marine world.

The GRD and colorswell decide quite consciously to the "Upcycling" of the old nets, so that valuable resources from the former fishing nets, can be used again.

"It is very close to our hearts to take supposedly discarded materials back into the material cycle and thus give them value again," says Stephanie Drach, founder of colorswell. "After all, the resources to turn old into new are available, we just have to use them. Moreover, this philosophy is transferable to many other areas in life, and that's what we want to convey."

The Munich-based start-up lovingly handcrafts the bracelets into statement bracelets that tell a story and represent a commitment to marine conservation on the wrist.

Under the motto "Live for the ocean / For a better life“ (Editors’ note: A play on words with a double meaning in the German language) they remind us of the threat to the Baltic Sea and the help the sea so urgently needs from us. The bracelets are now up for grabs in limited quantities as a special edition to mark the 30th anniversary of the Munich Dolphin Conservation Society.

"We are very happy that colorswell supports our mission," says Verena Platt-Till, Research Associate and Project Manager at GRD. "It's also nice for us to see something positive still emerging from the dangerous ghost nets. We would like to make a clear statement together with this. Of course, it would be even better if the nets were not entered into the Baltic Sea in the first place - but this is where politics is needed."
