Orcas in Iceland and Their Interactions with Pilot Whales

On January 29, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Dr. Anna Selbmann will give an online lecture as part of the Reef Explorer series: "A Killer on the Run: Orcas in Iceland and their interactions with pilot whales." An incredibly exciting topic that you can look forward to.

Orcas are known for their position at the top of the food chain. In the North Atlantic, interactions between orcas and pilot whales have been observed in various locations, with the orcas avoiding the pilot whales and sometimes literally fleeing from them. These interactions fascinate researchers because the exact triggers are not yet known.

Anna Selbmann lives and works in Iceland, where she is part of the Icelandic Orca Project team researching the acoustic behavior of orcas and their interactions with pilot whales. In this lecture, she will report on the team's research and present her latest findings on the role of acoustic signals in the interactions between killer whales and pilot whales.
