As head of the Marine Vertebrates Section at the Senckenberg Museum, he researches the diversity of marine worms – and has already participated in several deep-sea expeditions. Together with other scientists, he has discovered numerous new species that were previously hidden in the dark, unexplored depths of our oceans. In view of the current biodiversity crisis, the documentation and description of new species is of central importance.

In his lecture, Ekin Tilic reports on fascinating discoveries, surprising twists and happy coincidences that led to extraordinary scientific findings.

About Ekin Tilic

Ekin earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology in 2010 and then completed a postgraduate program, graduating with a Master of Science in Organismic, Evolutionary, and Paleobiology from the University of Bonn. For both his bachelor's and master's degrees, he conducted research in the laboratory of Prof. Dr. Heike Wägele at the Zoological Research Museum Koenig. His studies focused on the evolution of symbiosis between the nudibranch genus Phyllodesmium and photosynthetic zooxanthellae (Symbiodinium) as well as the acquisition and use of stinging cells in Aeolid nudibranchs.

He then moved to the laboratory of Prof. Dr. Thomas Bartolomaeus, where he began to study annelids and investigate the formation and ultrastructure of chaetae. For his doctoral thesis, he used a variety of morphological approaches, including immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy, histology, and 3D modeling. In his doctoral thesis, he investigated the formation and ultrastructure of annelid chaetae.

After completing his doctorate (Dr. rer. nat.) in December 2015, he continued to work as a postdoctoral researcher in Bonn until May 2017, when he joined the German Research Foundation (DFG) - Rouse Lab at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. He is currently working on a global phylogeny of feather worms (Sabellidae) with a focus on body size and life history. In his research, he uses phylogenomic methods to uncover the evolutionary relationships of polychaete taxa, while investigating their morphology using various bioimaging techniques.
