As if in 'frenzy' to three new German apnea records by Jens Stötzner in Hańcza
Apnoea diver Jens Stötzner set new deep diving records in three of four competition disciplines in the deepest lake in Poland at the deep diving competition "Crystal Clear Water" from 17-21.08.21.
In the discipline CWT (Constant Weight - with monofin) he dived down to -76m by his own effort and broke the 9 years old record of Torsten Erhardt. He improved his existing records in the lake in the disciplines CNF (Constant Weight No Fin - breaststroke) and CWTB (Constant Weight BiFin - with double fin) by 2m each to -56m in CNF and -66m in CWTB.
The mental challenge for apnea diving in the lake is with the rapidly dropping temperatures, where even in high summer the water temperature drops to 5°C at the bottom. The so-called temperature thermoclines make it difficult to relax for concentrated pressure equalization of the middle ear and sinuses.
The absolute darkness and limited visibility at depth also make orientation along the guide cable difficult.
Finally, for deep divers, nitrogen narcosis can still be insidious because it corrupts perception at depth. In the lake, this is intensified by the cold and darkness. This can manifest itself in time perception or even hallucinations. Every (scuba) diver who has ever experienced nitrogen narcosis can roughly imagine the difficulties of chasing records in this situation.
Due to the Corona restrictions and closed swimming pools, the exceptional athlete Stötzner shifted his training sessions to the open water. Even outside temperatures of -8°C did not discourage him to get closer to his goal.
But his old diving club in Regensburg (UCR), and his membership in the national squad, also gave him the opportunity to train in the pool at least once a week. Born in Berlin, he lives in Zirndorf and trains with the DUC in Nuremberg and the Scubuddies in Erlangen.
For the German Deep Diving Championship to be held at the end of August 2021 in the Wildschütz quarry near Leipzig, the successful participation in Hańcza was a first final rehearsal for Stötzner.
Good luck for the next apnea dives from our Taucher.Net team!
