Ship archaeology in theory and practice from 18 - 23 August 2025

In summer 2025, the traditional Ship Archaeology Seminar of the Gesellschaft für Schiffsarchäologie e.V. (Society for Ship Archaeology) will celebrate its 25th anniversary. The aim of this training series is to impart basic knowledge in the field of ship archaeology in theory and practice.

The seminar is aimed at students and archaeologically interested divers who not only want to get to know shipwrecks as fascinating diving destinations, but also as particularly informative historical sources.

Over six consecutive days, the course provides basic knowledge in the fields of ‘Ship archaeology and harbour facilities in the Baltic Sea region’, monument law and various prospection and documentation techniques in theory and practice.

In the practical part, the basics of researching and documenting shipwrecks and hydraulic engineering structures are taught. After measuring exercises on the beach, the programme includes boat and shore dives. The methods will be learnt on a shipwreck in Warnemünde Bay and a historic harbour facility.
