Tourists penalized on entry to Crete

All holidaymakers arriving in Greece by air must register electronically at least 24 hours before their arrival, indicating where they have been before and where they will be staying in Greece. Now, for the first time, passengers on a flight from Germany were penalized for failing to complete the registration.

At least two passengers on a flight from Berlin who landed in Crete this Thursday, had to pay a fine of 500 euros for failing to register electronically in advance. This was the first time since the introduction of the new registration rule on July 1 that the Greek authorities imposed a fine.

Previously it was possible to fill in the form in writing after arrival at a Greek airport. Those being fined told reporters at Heraklion airport that no one had informed them about the procedure, under which every tourist must carry a QR code generated by the electronic registration, prior to arrival. There has not yet been a reaction from the Ministry of Tourism in Athens, yet.

In addition, random checks will be carried out on those entering the country. Selected ones will then have to undergo a CoV test upon arrival. Until the result is available, the tested persons should isolate themselves in their accommodation as far as possible; the result should be available as soon as possible. Persons with a positive test result must then spend 14 days in specially equipped isolated accommodation in hotels. The costs will be covered by Greece.

The official rules for Greece state: "From July ’20 on, residents from "EU+" countries may travel to Greece. "EU+" consists of the European Union, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway, Lichtenstein and Iceland. International flights are allowed at all airports in Greece. Extension of the ban on direct flights from the United Kingdom and Sweden is in force until 15.7.20. All travelers must fill in their passenger form before entering Greece".

As the rules for travelling to European countries can be subject to short-term changes, the EU has set up a central website where travelers can find up-to-date information on the destination country and entry requirements - reopen.europa.eu.
