Blue not UV. Frequently (also yesterday) I got the information from divers, who use multifunctional torches with red, white and UV-LEDs. Similar to my US colleague Charles Mazel (founder of nighties) I repeatedly explain the disadvantages of UV-light in comparison to blue light (royal blue LEDs) during night dives with fluorescence. Here is a good explanation of Prof.Dr. Charles Mazel > http://www.nightsea.com/articles/blue-light-for-underwater-fluorescence/
Especially beginners prefer those multifunctional torches, since they expect fantastic results with the UV-light. The contrary is the case.
Arguments against multifunctional torches:
1.instead of blue royal-blue > UV-LEDs
2. no built-in dichroic Filter (important for the excellent brilliance of the "rainbow-colors")
3. no reflectors
4. you do not need red LEDs, because in the night you will nearly not find shy fishes. Corals will not escape!
to point 4: There is still the common confusion to discriminate between Lumen and Lux. The information about LUMEN is the light of a LED, which it sends to all sides (up to 180 degree). Important is the light in LUX, which reaches the target (between 10 to 80 degree). In our torches we use
reflectors with 80 degrees. This is optimal for photo and video documentation. Our blue-light torches and blue-modules are in this price and performance category the best worldwide. Together with our yellow mask filter also the beginner receives outstanding results. Visit my WEB page in English and German for further details. > http://www.uni-due.de/fluodives/
