Worldwide protest leads to success

It is official! Certainly not least due to the massive worldwide protest of conservation organizations like Sharkproject, us divers and the change.org petition, the Maldivian government has changed its mind. Yesterday it was announced that they will refrain from considerations to allow shark fishing in Maldivian territorial waters again.

The Minister of Fisheries, Zaha Waheed, has assured Sharkproject that the existing shark protection will not be officially relaxed after all, although she had publicly suggested this at a press conference a few weeks ago. The minister assured that it would also be her concern to further expand and better implement the laws that have been in place for many years.

Here we say a big thank you to Sharkproject, all the divers who participated in the protest and to all those who participated in the change.org petition!
